The Full Pour
To experience the soul of Munich beer culture, Augustiner is your first order of business. And if you happen to be rolling into the city via the Hauptbahnhof (central terminal), you are already in close proximity to one of their most ideal locations, the Augustiner Bräustuben. This historical site is perhaps the finest way to throw back some of their world-renown beer, in a definitive Bavarian beerhall. To be sure, this may be your best shot at the authentic experience you've traveled here to see. The brewing history dates back to 1328, by the founding monks, and brewing has been taking place at the Landsberger Strasse location since 1884 (source: Augustiner). This is why you came to Munich and this is why it is an obligatory stop.

Why is this on THL?
Those that count historical beer experiences as some of their most prized memories will be quite happy with their time spent at Augustiner Bräustuben. This massive complex spans an entire mega-block, consisting of the brewery operations, beerhall and a more formal restaurant. The location is somewhat of a blessing as well, as it's just far enough away from the Marienplatz that mostly the purists will seek it out. This means that you'll typically be seated next to locals at those famed long tables and will have the opportunity to make a few new friends if you're lucky.
While the Edelstoff Export in the picture is a refreshing Bavarian treat, other quality options include a Heller Bock, Weissbier (wheat), Pilsner, Dunkel (dark) and Lagerbier (Hell). Seasonal selections can include the popular Oktoberfest Bier and the more robust Maximator for those chilly winter months.
In addition to the beer options that have been honed for centuries, the hearty food and good cheer here will round out your mission for the ultimate gemütlichkeit vibe. If the weather is nice, and you prefer to take your Augustiner stint outside, check out their Keller Biergarten, which is only one kilometer away. If you go to the biergarten, don't be too distracted by the expansive biergarten itself. Make it down to the Keller (German for basement) at some point and take a trip back in time.
