The Full Pour
Beer Planet has historically been somewhat of a “stroll through” bottle shop when visiting the area in and around the central core of Brussels. While there was always a interesting selection of fine Belgian beers, there wasn’t necessarily a high chance of getting a return on your time investment beyond general perusing. Nevertheless, you were in Brussels and it was something you did. We all know how the tourist zones can often influence the pricing (rents are higher) and selection. Finding that delicate balance for satisfying the many walks of life in these areas requires inventory skills that most owners don’t always seem to master. As of summer 2017, however, it should be noted that Beer Planet has new owners. Under the watchful eyes of Pieter and Tatiana, there seems to be a newfound level of excitement in the air for this little shop. Not only are they extremely knowledgeable of Belgian beer, including the lambic scene, but they are pleasantly helpful and you can tell that they are genuinely into this stuff like the rest of us.
WHy is This on THL?
The Hop Leaves will sound like a broken record when it comes to bottle shops. Not only are they fun to explore, but they play a major function in helping you settle into your new surroundings. And who doesn’t love to return home with the unexpected treasure that turns up at times? If you are visiting/staying in the area around The Grand Place, pop into Beer Planet for a look around and a chat with the very friendly new owners. You won't find a crazy-deep selection of international beers, but that’s not why you came to Belgium in the first place. Pleasant surprises upon the last visit, were Tilquin Oude Gueuze Squared (the accident that is no longer produced), 3 Fonteinen, Horal (15 and 17) and quite a few options from the De Struise Black Damnation series. These examples are not always the most reasonably-priced selections in general, especially when you're not buying directly from the brewer/blender, but this could be your opportunity if you are not venturing outside of Brussels on this go-around.
