The Full pour
There are so many beer gardens in Munich, and consequently there are several resources out there solely dedicating themselves to that specific niche of beer travel. Let's be clear, beer gardens are an extremely enjoyable aspect of German culture and likewise an excellent shot at meeting some new friends. They are also a pretty safe time investment in that they almost always gaurantee you a rewarding cultural experience, provided you choose the right ones. It's perhaps obvious that each one has it's own attributes and drawbacks. Some are harder to get to, some are smaller, some can be full of tourists (seasonal), you get the point. While this is a topic that could be debated to no end, the Chinese Tower (Chinesischer Turm) beer garden is the one that seems to get the balance right for a variety of reasons. Aside from the Viktualienmarkt beer garden (located off the Marienplatz), the Chinese Tower may be the most famous of Munich's beer gardens, so why would The Hop Leaves point you there? Let's get into it.
First and foremost, It is situated right in the middle of The English Garden (Englischer Garten), affording you a reason to explore one of the most tranquil of urban parks. These are the former hunting grounds of the Wittelsbach dynasty. You can expect to walk under canopies of stately trees and beside flowing streams of Alpine runoff (engineered to German perfection). You'll see locals playing with their dogs, university students lazing in the sun, meandering bike paths and Münchners just strolling for the sake of it. You almost, almost, forget that you're on a mission for that beer garden. But then, the trees part to reveal that seemingly out of place tower and all the goodness taking place in this jeweled parkland of urban solace.
The beer garden itself is proportionate to the park it inhabits, meaning it's massive. Seating 7,000 locals and tourists alike, you shouldn't have any issues with finding a seat. The food options are as extensive as a beer garden gets, there is a Bavarian band on the weekends and you can sip some Hofbräu without stepping foot in that famed hall in the city center.

Why is this on THL?
You're in Bavaria, so it's inevitable that you're going to want to get your beer garden on at some point. The Chinese Tower has all of the bases covered for tradition, food, drink and location wow factor. In addition to exploring one of the world's largest urban parks, it is an opportunity to get out of the city center and escape the higher concentration of tourists. If you're visiting during the Oktoberfest, well, you probably need some "country" air anyway. If you want more beer garden options, and are willing to venture a little further north, head to Seehaus to have some Paulaner alongside a serene lake. It's the perfect excuse for a relaxing stroll in the ever-winding English Garden.
