Eschenbraü Brauerei, along with nearby Vagabund Brauerei, is a bit farther afield (Wedding) for most and may consequently require just a little bit more planning. If you can swing it though, the biggest reward is of a local nature. Some have a little trouble finding this place on the first visit, but just keep in mind (as you perhaps circle the block again) that it occupies a courtyard in the middle of several residential buildings and look for the signage accordingly. The grounds of this amiable complex include both a shaded biergarten and an expansive basement pub, complete with wooded everything. True to biergarten form, the entire place is designed for people to spend hours socializing and enjoying fresh-brewed beer. In addition to their typical offerings, they also feature seasonal beers in various German styles. While the food is limited to Flammkuchen (German flatbread) and pretzels, you will typically see locals bringing in picnic food for their families. You'll also notice said locals filling up growlers near the end of their stay, which is fairly unique for an operation such as this in Deutschland.
why is this on THL?
You will not be docking your boat amongst a multitude of other whale hunter rigs when you visit here, but that's part of the charm at Eschenbraü. The beers expertly pay respect to traditional German styles, and are administered in an entirely German biergarten format, which can be a solid experience all by itself. But the soul of this atmosphere, combined with the large presence of locals just doing their neighborhood thing, is also intoxicating beyond the exemplary beer. Settings such as this can remind us of why we wander about in the first place and how paramount it is to venture off of the beaten tourist paths. Furthermore, a visit here can easily be combined with Vagabund Brauerei (about 5 blocks away).
