As you negotiate the winding, tourist-filled passages of this particular section of Amsterdam's Old Town, you may feel slightly compelled to bail on your plans to visit In de Wildeman. Not because you detest widespread throngs of visitors looking to get their Europe on in rather tight quarters (or maybe you do), but because it sort of has that ubiquitous outdoor mall vibe from certain trajectories. But this is In de Wildeman man, you think to yourself, and It seems to top so many of those beer-geek lists that declare it a must-do when in Amsterdam. Well, keep that last thought at the forefront of your mind friend and stay on target. Occupying a historical space once used as a distillery, this charismatic little parlor is one of the more unique ways to find sanctuary in this section of Amsterdam. Even further, it is mandatory viewing for anyone serious about experiencing some very local Dutch culture.
Why is this on THL?
In de Wildeman is everything a knackered beer maven desires after a full day of crisscrossing canals to and fro. Not only do they offer you a sweeping spectrum of beer styles (Belgium, Netherlands, US, UK, Germany and beyond), but there is so much more to treasure about this place beyond just the beer. If your timing is fortuitous, Elaine may be your charming beer ambassador. Look around, there are both faithful and new patrons chatting and going about their daily routines. Listen closely, there is no music to clutter your thoughts or impede on said discussions. Now, just settle in. This is the sort of place we all wish was located in our own neighborhood.
