The Full Pour
Once upon a time, a group of close friends traveled the world together in search of craft beer experiences. During those excursions, spanning over several years, they spent a lot of time talking with the people working behind the scenes of small breweries. Naturally, those observations resulted in further reflection with regards to their hometown of Stuttgart. After realizing just how underserved it was for options in this realm, they became determined to do something about it.
Fast forward to 2018, and one could easily suggest that the brightest beacon for craft beer in Stuttgart belongs to Kraftpaule. While some might consider that a rather bold statement, given the various other contenders that play such a significant role to the city in their own unique way, there is no doubt that these guys are on a mission to place Stuttgart firmly on Europe's craft beer map. This is not an easy task, mind you, considering the fact that they just happen to operate in one of Deutschland's more traditional beer cities. Similar to other cities in the region, Stuttgart has centuries-old brewing traditions that have produced venerable staples such as Dinkelacker Brauerei, Scwhwaben Bräu and Stuttgarter Hofbräu (just to name a few). With those established brands being honed to perfection over generations, they seem to be fully engrained in the collective minds of the local beer drinking baseline. This dynamic has consequently placed Kraftpaule squarely into a rather distinct position/opportunity, continue to embrace that deep heritage while functioning as an ambassador of what's going on in the larger craft beer universe. Given the exceptional task at hand, they are methodically bridging this gap and seem quite poised for the next level.

Why is this on THL?
Aside from being operated by really good people, Kraftpaule is included on The Hop Leaves because of what they represent to the Stuttgart craft beer community and the numerous contributions they've made thus far. While creating a cracking venue for both traditional and modernist geeks to converge is an excellent start, they also seem to embrace the role of fostering a framework of collaboration for the bigger beer picture.
For our first case in point, it's quite evident that they understand the importance of being an excellent host. One of their more significant achievements in that vein, is founding the Stuttgarter Craft Beer Festival. This event brings regional beer fans together every April, to sample the creations of a multitude of both local and international brewers. It is the perfect opportunity for new beer experiences to be had, friendships to be made and an increased awareness of what's happening in other regions to be gained.
These guys also offer up their Stöckach bar for monthly craft beer meet-ups/shares and play host to various breweries for tap-takeovers as well. In other words, they're quite active in the local community and fully understand that all of these moving parts are important to nurturing a culture.
If your travels bring you to Stuttgart, it’s definitely a good idea to catch an U-bahn out and pay them a visit. They're a lot of fun to talk with and have very interesting backgrounds as well. If you happen to be in town on the third Thursday of the month, stop in for their Craft Beer Meet-up and make some new friends.
