The Full Pour
Tucked away in the old quarter of Bad Cannstatt, literally steps from the U/S-Bahn stops, Mon Petit Café is a unique gem in the Stuttgart beer scene. You quickly become aware of the refined taste of the owner (Michalis), when you see the multitude of rare bottles (they're empty, I've double-checked) perched proudly on the shelves of his café. This showcase of beer interests is indicative of carefully-selected tap options, typically from all over the world. Wanderers reading this may be interested to know that it's not uncommon for pretty rare beers to pop up on one of the four taps here. This is because you can travel all over Europe and meet few enthusiasts at the level of Michalis. Whether it's lambics, stouts or IPAs . . . this man can teach you a thing or two.
Why is this on THL?
Mon Petit Café gets things right, in a variety of ways. First and foremost, Michalis has carved out an almost cult-like following for niche locals, many of whom are looking for beers that were previously thought to be non-existent in this highly traditional beer city. With that being the case, this is a realm where many of Stuttgart's craft whale hunters seem to gather. It's not uncommon for his faithful fans to bring in a recent catch from far-flung travels, for an impromptu share. MPC also formally hosts shares of their own as well, featuring highly-regarded breweries from all over the map.
From a design perspective, Michalis has constructed a perfect little haunt for making visitors feel right at home. These pictures were obviously taken right before opening and highlight the stunning loft-like architecture. But the place particularly shines at night, with indirect lighting and groovy tunes routinely putting all of his loyal visitors in a relaxed state of mind.
Once you've fully appreciated the beer component here, you realize that you are really in a hybrid concept. The blend between coffee patrons and beer geeks (he features gin tastings too) is completely seamless. While you may be enjoying a hoppy IPA or stout, fresh from a galaxy far far away, the next table over might be a couple people happily chatting over espresso. Next to them, might be a group experiencing a gin tasting.
In the end, Mon Petit Café is a hub that satisfies a diverse set of services and interests. The passion for beer is definitely the star of the show, as revealed by recently playing host to their first Cantillon Zwanze day in 2017 (1 of only 2 in Deutschland), but it also seems to effortlessly attract visitors from all walks of life. Buyer beware, you may find yourself staying here much longer than you had originally anticipated.
